Episode 4: Book Launch and Discussion: “The Primordial Modernity of Malay Nationality: Contemporary Identity in Malaysia and Singapore”  by Humairah Zainal and Kamaludeen Mohamed Nasir

Over the years, many have attempted to locate the essence of what constitutes Malayness. Despite the overwhelming interest, the concept remains an elusive one. The need to accurately describe what constitutes Malayness is especially pressing in present times given the rise of various populist movements globally and the movements’ insistence on the supremacy of primordial attributes. This book uses the case studies of Malays in Malaysia and Singapore to discuss the uneasy relationship between the primordial and the modern which characterizes the formation of identities in contemporary societies.
